The View from the West Hill: A Conversation with my Mom
|
-- How was your visit with your friend from California? -- It was good. I had lunch with her and her boyfriend and another friend, and then I ended up going to dinner with them and some other people, too. -- She has a boyfriend? -- Um, yeah, and he's never been here, and she wanted him to meet some of her friends here. -- She brought her boyfriend? -- Yeah, why? -- Wasn't that a little strange? -- Well, nothing ever really developed between us, although she assures me that it wasn't me, it was her. The story of my life. Besides, that was a couple of years ago anyway. It's all good. -- It wasn't strange? -- I've had some pretty lengthy conversations with my ex-wife's boyfriend. Now THAT's strange. -- Well, ok, I guess it's not that strange then. -- Plus, it turns out he's a really nice guy. So nice, in fact, that if she weren't with him, I might want to give it a shot. -- (pause...) -- That's a joke, Mom. -- (heavy sigh...) When do they go back to California? -- They leave Monday morning. -- Hmmm. -- What? -- That only leaves you tomorrow to make a play for the boyfriend. |
